Practical questions and answers

What are the stages of product development?

Start with the need, define requirements, develop a concept, prove the function, integrate a prototype, run user trials and review manufacturability. Each transition should depend on evidence, not simply on elapsed time.

How do you define a decision gate?

State the question a stage must answer, the evidence required and who accepts it. For example: does sensing work in the intended environment? A test record answers that question; a slide deck or a photo of the device does not.

When is a prototype ready for production?

Production readiness requires review of manufacturing files, components, assembly, maintenance, testing and applicable approval requirements. Not all are included in a prototype engagement. The proposal should distinguish completed work from the next-stage scope.
