Practical questions and answers

Which printing material should you choose?

There is no universal best material. Start with load, temperature, flexibility and finish, consult the specific material data sheet and test a sample under intended conditions. A successful print alone does not establish suitability.

How do PLA, PETG, ABS and TPU compare?

PLA is a starting point for visual models away from elevated heat. PETG merits evaluation for practical parts, while ABS requires controlled printing conditions and ventilation. TPU is relevant when flexibility is a functional requirement, not a drop-in replacement for a rigid part.

What should a material brief contain?

Describe the operating environment, load direction, sunlight or liquid exposure and mating dimensions. Send a file or photo and state whether the part is for presentation or functional testing. Food or body contact requires a specialist assessment rather than a generic recommendation.

Initial material comparison: start with the intended use
MaterialWhen to evaluate itWhat to check
PLAAn appearance model for size and assembly reviewOperating temperature and loading
PETGA practical part or device enclosureRequired stiffness and mounting fit
ABSA design requiring this material’s propertiesPrinting conditions, ventilation and shrinkage
TPUA flexible cover or bumperFlexibility grade and dimensions under load
