Practical questions and answers
What is an embedded system and how does development begin?
An embedded system combines electronics and software to perform a defined function inside a device, such as reading a sensor or managing an interface. Development begins with inputs, outputs, power and operating conditions, not merely a board choice. Specify startup and failure behavior, together with a repeatable way to verify the intended function.
When is a development board enough versus a custom PCB?
A development board helps test a concept and connect sensors early. Evaluate a custom PCB when enclosure dimensions, connectors, power or assembly become clear constraints. Establish essential requirements first. A successful prototype with temporary wiring does not demonstrate that a manufacturable, maintainable version is ready.
How do you define hardware and firmware tests?
Write a test case for each input and output, covering normal, missing and out-of-range conditions. Test startup and restart while recording firmware and board revisions. For battery operation, measure consumption across agreed usage modes; do not infer runtime from capacity alone or from one instantaneous measurement.
Does a watchdog solve every failure?
No. ESP-IDF watchdogs help detect conditions such as tasks running too long without yielding, with behavior determined by configuration. They do not establish measurement accuracy or control-logic safety. Investigate and log the cause, then test recovery rather than using restarts to conceal a recurring defect.
What handover files should an embedded system include?
Agree which schematics, component lists, PCB files, firmware, build and programming instructions, and test results are included in scope. Distinguish editable sources from an executable release and define usage rights. Document connectors, power requirements and revisions so maintenance does not depend on one person’s memory.
Turn this guidance into a clear scope
Develop a device-level electronic function across inputs, outputs, power and firmware, with or without internet connectivity.
